The first official battle of the American Revolution. The shot heard 'round the world, as Schoolhouse Rock tells us,"was the start of the revolution". No one is sure who fired the first shot, but it doesn't really matter. There was no going back.
The battles were fought on April 19th in Massachusetts. After warnings spread by William Dawes and Paul Revere alerted the colonists to the British soldiers' approach-- ironically they were going to confiscate weapons to avoid rebellion--militiamen gathered on the Lexington Green to meet and delay the soldiers. Although neither side was ordered to fire, there was a shot which was quickly followed by British volley. The militia retreated and the British continued to Concord to continue their search for weapons where more fighting breaks out. This time though, the colonists had higher numbers of better trained minutemen who were able to both intimindate the British soldiers and pursue them on their retreat. The war had begun, and the patriots had proven that they were, in fact, capable of waging war.
