Then was the most chilling domestic hijacking in US history. Was not an act of international terrorism, but had a major effect on the nation's ability to deal with that challenge. 3 men with criminal records hijacked plane and demanded $10M, and diverted plane to Toronto when they didn't get all the money - making it an international incident. Desperate for government to take them seriously, they flew to a nuclear research center in Tenessee, and threatened to fly plane in and cause nation's first nuclear disaster if they didn't get money. Bunch of other stuff happened after. The overall incident revealed flaws in the government's standard procedure to deal with hijackings. One of the results of this incident was the beginning of serious anti-terrorist security measures at the nation's airports. US government also took possibility of nuclear terrorism seriously for the first time.
