Formed form a loose group of smaller craft unions by Samuel Gompers. this was the birth of genuine, non-secret, organised labour. Membership wasn't open to all, it was exclusively for skilled workers as Gompers knew it would be more successful if unskilled workers were excluded as it would have more political and economic power.

Although conservative in nature, Gompers wasn't afraid to call for a strike or boycott. He refused to pursue a radical program for political change and therefore maintained the support of the American government and public. Gompers was seen as the unofficial leader of the labour world in America.
