For the first time ever, nuclear pulse powered deep space probes sent beyond the Oort cloud reach the edge of the Sol System's "Speed Limiter" bubble, and cannot seem to detect similar bubbles in any other parts of the Galaxy.

The revelation that faster-than-light travel IS in fact possible was a joy to rocket scientists, but this discovery was muddied by the fact that some ancient force had decided that the Sol System specifically should not have any access to it.
