While the resources and funding simply was not there yet, AMI was intent on making sure humanity could one day class itself as a permanently multiplanetary species. The Ares series of missions had concluded, but they were always only meant as a stepping stone towards self sustaining permanent habitation, followed by eventual terraformation.

Due to AMI's unparalleled capabilities in computation and forward-thinking, the I.S.A. decided that the best course of action for ensuring the future settlement of mars was to hand over all Martian managerial duties to AMI.

In what would be called the "Artificial Intelligence Martian Settlement" program, or A.I.M.S., a satellite swarm was deployed to the orbit of the red planet in order to provide AMI an all-encompassing birds eye view of the world she had chosen to make her project.
