By the mid to late 2060's humanity's dependence on fossil fuel usage would become effectively zero. Thanks to technological improvements back on earth in fields such as solar, wind, and hydro power, the replacement of old pollution heavy power generation methods was already well underway.

The introduction of cheap and easy helium 3 into the Earth economy that resulted from the corporate Lunar mining boom was the final death blow to fossil fuels that humanity needed to fully move on from their usage.

Another big contributor for the increased pace of the transition toward a fully renewable earth was the calculated efforts made by AMI while still in orbit over Mars. Ami's advanced self improving mind was capable of coming up with energy management solutions that Earth's best scientists would have spent a century or more trying to figure out on their own.

While the end of fossil fuels is undoubtedly a great milestone for humanity, it did not come nearly early enough to prevent highly damaging levels of global warming which would take centuries to fully negate.
