Manfredi is murdered by Caesar Cicero, during a massive purge of "old-timer" mafiosi, the so-called "Night of the Hushed Tones". Cicero, taking over Manfredi's position as boss of bosses, establishes a power-sharing arrangement called the Maggia, a group of Mafia families across the country of equal stature, to avoid gang wars in the future.
