In 1945, following the end of World War II, Australia faced a critical need to increase its population for economic and defense purposes, thus introducing the "Populate or Perish" policy. This policy aimed to encourage migration to Australia in order to bolster the nation's population and protect it from potential threats in the region. It was a direct response to the previous Immigration Restriction Act of 1901, which enforced the White Australia Policy, restricting non-European migration.

Statistics from this period indicate that the "Populate or Perish" policy had a significant impact on migration numbers. Between 1945 and 1950, Australia's population increased by around 1 million people, largely attributed to the influx of migrants from European countries, particularly from Britain.
