The Soviet flag was lowered on Christmas Day, 1991 for the last time. The new Russian republic was formed and the Soviet republics became independent.

Mikhail Gorbachev used Perestroika as economic controls and also used glasnost for relaxing the government control over society. In August Hardline communists attempted to replace Mikhail Gorbachev in a military coup but they however failed and communist control was lost in the Soviet Union.

The former republics gained independence, and Russia developed as a representative democracy under the leadership of Boris. Later on, the U.S. started to develop a more positive relationship with Russia.
