Darius was killed shortly after the battle, and Stateira and her family were taken prisoner by Alexander.In 324 BC, Alexander married Stateira as part of a political marriage to unite the Macedonian and Persian empires. The marriage was reportedly arranged by Alexander's mother, Olympias. Stateira was said to be very beautiful, and Alexander was reportedly fond of her.
