1 ene 1901 año - Judith and the Head of Holofernes | Gustav Klimt

Descripción:

Gustav Klimt (1869-1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objets d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. He was very influenced by Japanese art and its methods. He is famous for his painting “The Kiss”.
Judith and the Head of Holofernes was made in 1901 in the Belle Époque era, and is not a traditional depiction of the story. It’s largely a portrait of a woman bearing features considered Viennese Society Beauty. Judith is bare-chested, and with a smile of triumph holds Holofermes’ head, although it’s partly cut from the picture and not the center of the painting. Judith’s sensuality and the fact that she is taking pleasure from this act, shocked Vienna, and they could not accept this version of her over the Jewish woman who risked her virtue to help her city. They insisted it was a painting of the murderer Salome (despite the literal title on the frame) and for a long time it was known as ‘Salome’. The painting was bought almost immediately by Klimt's Swiss contemporary, the painter Ferdinand Hodler.
