This was a telegram from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, to the President of Mexico offering, if Mexico struck out against the US, to back them in their efforts and help them reclaim Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The telegram was intercepted and published March 1, 1917, causing a huge outcry among the American people.
