8 h 15 m, 6 agos 1945 año - Dropping of A-Bomb on Hiroshima

Descripción:

At 8:15 AM, on the morning of August 6th, 1945, the crew of the US bomber Enola Gay dropped the Little Boy (pictured below), the first wartime Atomic Bomb, on the city of Hiroshima. While only a tiny portion of the explosive material inside it actually reacted (only less than a kilogram of the 64 kg of enriched uranium reacted), it was enough to spread widespread damage, with an estimated 140,000 deaths at the time, most of them being civilians. The main image shows a picture taken from near where the bomb exploded, showing dead, blackened trees and the space where buildings used to be. In the background, the later-named Atomic Bomb Dome is shown, which only managed to stay standing as the bomb was detonated right above it.

The destruction that the Little Boy, and later Fat Man, caused, as well as the widespread deaths, served as a warning to the Soviet Union that the USA had major weapons, and that they should not be messed with. This escalated into the Soviet Union building missiles, which ballooned into the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War.
