18 mayo 1879 año - Treaty of Gandamak

Descripción:

This is the treaty that was intended to end the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This forced multiple new policies on the Afghans which hurt their sovereignty. The biggest of these was that the Afghan government can no longer make any foreign policy decisions without the British. In addition, the treaty allows British officers to reside in the country without any interference and the officer's safety would be ensured. Finally, all British citizens have the right to trade freely in Afghanistan. This treaty is in the context of the Afghan people pushing back harshly both in the first and second Anglo-Afghan wars to British rule. So when the British were finally able to defeat the rebels they did not want to set up a British government that would almost certainly be marred with insurrections but rather took the chance to establish a monopoly of power over the region. Therefore shutting down any chance for the Russians to try to prove their influence over the region. This strategy ensured that the reason the war started; the afghan government favoring Russia over Britain wouldn’t happen again while avoiding the high levels of nationalistic violence that erupted in the country whenever there is a foreign takeover. However this doesn’t mean the violence was avoided all together as the British envoy was murdered shortly after the treaty passed. However, This treaty established stability under a foreign influence that hasn’t been replicated in the country since as nearly fourty years passed until the third Anglo-Afghan war established a fully sovigern Afghanistan.
