The United States took control of the French-owned sectors of the Panama Canal and held onto the territory until President Jimmy Carter signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaty which began the process of relinquishing control of the canal from the U.S. to Panama. In the photograph, the U.S.S Missouri transits through the canal in 1945 En route to the West Coast of the United States.
