The first man in space was Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet Air Force pilot who made history on April 12, 1961, by successfully completing the first manned orbit of the Earth. Gagarin's spacecraft, Vostok 1, was a spherical capsule that was launched into space via a modified missile. The flight lasted approximately 108 minutes, during which Gagarin orbited the Earth once and reached an altitude of about 200 miles. After re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, Gagarin safely ejected from the spacecraft and landed via parachute.
