1 abr 1917 año - John Arthur Robinson started order of Sleeping Car Porters

Descripción:

John Arthur Robinson and other porters such as J.W. Barber, B.F. Jones, and P. White established the order of Sleeping Car Porters (OSCP). This started in Winnipeg, in April of 1917. The OSCP were formed to improve the working conditions for Black porters, but they faced a lot of racism, specifically from the Canadian Brotherhood of Railroad Employees (CBRE) and the Canadian National Railway (CNR). These organizations discriminated against Black workers and viewed them as disposable, cheap labour. Despite this, the OSCP negotiated contracts that improved the working conditions and wages for all porters.
