1 ene 1896 año - Sir Wilfrid Laurier elected

Descripción:

In 1896, Sir Wilfrid Laurier was elected as Prime Minister of Canada, and he stayed in that position until 1911. Over this time he affected the rights of Black people in Canada. Sir Wilfrid Laurier had an order approved that prohibited Black people from immigrating to Canada for a year. He wrote “which race is deemed unsuitable to the climate and requirements of Canada.” referring to Black people. Sir Wilfrid Laurier being elected had a negative impact on human rights for Black Canadians, as he discouraged Black immigrants in Canada, and this is a trend seen in other exclusionary immigration policies.
