Iwo Gima was a Japanese-held island in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and about 750 miles off of Japan's mainland. The U.S. was looking for a new airfield to launch more attacks on mainland Japan from and Iwo Gima was just the spot. Iwo Gima had three airfields on it. On February 19, the U.S. landed troops on Iwo Jima. There was a problem though, the land of Iwo Jima was Made up of gray volcanic ash. This made it hard for vehicles to land on and get a grip. Japanese defenses were very strategically placed on large dunes and open spots to kill the most enemies. The U.S. believed that the bombardments they had done were effective in breaking down the Japanese defenses. They were wrong, Japan also waited to start firing till more men were on the beaches to bring the most casualties. The U.S. thought they were good as thousands of men landed and no shots were fired but as they started to fill the beach more gunshots started to break loose. Despite high U.S. casualties and many hours of fighting the U.S. was able to move past the beaches and take the Airfields.
