the dowager empress Cixi, an odd woman, gave her support to a strong anti-foreign rebellion, the boxer rebellion, because she thought foreign forces were pushing for her retirement. In the Boxer rebellion, a ton of non foreigners were killed. Many believed that foreign weapons couldn't harm them, so they stormed foreign embassies in Beijing. Unfortunately, foreign weapons could harm them. The rebellion was crushed, and Cixi's support of the rebellion lost the Qing dynasty its last semblance of sanity. Rebellion would soon follow.
