Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin to more efficiently sort out the burrs from cotton. It was significant in global history because the invention enabled the expansion of cotton production, leading to an increase in the use of enslaved labor. Cotton was initially grown largely in the south of what would became the united states, but was later introduced in Egypt and India.
