The Special Category Status was an agreement for newly arrested prisoners of political violence. They did not see themselves as criminals. The agreement made the prisoners more like Prisoners of War, with more free time, more food parcels and the right to wear their own clothes. This agreement was ended to any new prisoners by the Labour government in 1976. This was responded with protests from prisoners by refusing to wear prison clothes and smearing excrement on the walls of their cells.
