Cause: Before Harriet began writing her novel, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed. The conditions the law brought to the north encouraged Stowe to begin writing her novel to show others her viewpoint on what she felt was an unchristian law and to show white slave owners the perspective of the slaves.

Effect: It helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War. Became the most popular book of its time, changing the minds of many who read it. It sold 300,000 copies within the first year.
