The Wright brothers looked up to the German aviator Otto Lilienthal. They were always experimenting with different machines. When they saw that Lilienthal was killed in a gliding accident they decided to start doing flying experiments. The two brothers' names were Wilbur and Orville. Before flying they had their own newspaper. Wilbur edited it, and Orville was the publisher. They also later opened their own bike shop, in which they fixed them and made their own designs for their bikes. To help design the glider they headed to Kitty Hawk North Carolina. They went there because it is known to have good strong winds. To help make the wings they studied birds and the angles that their wings are positioned at, and they developed a concept called wing warping. Finally they had created the first free controlled flight. On May 25 1910 they shared a six minute flight together because their father wanted them to. After they landed Orville took his father on a flight with him in which he said " Higher Orville, higher!"
