Fox News is founded to appeal to the burgeoning American conservative movement, and quickly becomes a vehicle for media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s extremely conservative beliefs. It gained a massive boost in viewership during the Presidential election of 2000, and became the most-watched network in cable news history by 2020. In that time, it evolved from a right-leaning news outlet into a tool for manufacturing outrage to mobilize extreme conservatives on social issues, legally distinguish itself as an entertainment channel to avoid misinformation lawsuits, and eventually blatantly lie to the public in order to build a following for Murdoch’s brand of conservatism and protect the interests of policymakers that subscribed to it.
