This treaty ended the Spanish-American war. Cuba was freed from Spain. Americans got Guam. Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the US (as payment for war costs). The US bought the Philippines for $20 million (pretty cheap) w/out consulting any Filipinos. The US public divided over what to do with the Philippines.
