As part of the Spain-American war, the US invades the Philippines (another Spanish colony).

Assistant secretary of the navy, Teddy Roosevelt plans the invasion. He thought that Spain would never see it coming.

Commodore George Dewey leads US to Philippines. They destroy a Spanish fleet in Manilla bay. US didn’t suffer a single loss.

The US gov then tells Dewey to invade, he’s like huh? (as he had a crew of sailors). The US gov then sends ground troops 4 months later (kind of a blunder, shows that US wasn’t fully prepared and well-organized).

Emilio Aguinaldo = Filipino rebel leader. He was exile from the Philippines in 1897 by the Spanish. The US brought him back the next year. Dewey thought that Aguinaldo (and the group he led) would weaken Spanish power and give the US influence over Filipino insurgents (he would be wrong, wrong, wrong. Aguinaldo would led an insurrection against the US a year later).

The Spanish -American war helped veterans from the Civil War unite (former Confeds and Union soldiers were working together).

Rough Riders = first US volunteer Cavalry led and organized by Teddy Roosevelt during the Cuba Invasion. Largely consisted of wannabe cowboys and ex-polo players. They cleared the way for San Juan Hill. Roosevelt became a hero for leading them (helped lead to presidency
