Descripción:
Tammany hall was a political machine (a group of conspiring politicians) based in New York City and led by Boss Tweed.
Members were corrupt government officials who would only pretend to care about serving the public. In reality, members were really trying to get rich by stealing tax-payers’ money.
They would often collect money, spend a little of it on the public, and then pocket the rest.
Boss Tweed stole millions of dollars with Tammany Hall. He was finally caught because of the New York Times and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. The NY Times published damning evidence of the corruption and Nast made many cartoons illustrating it. Both sparked public outrage and led to Tweed’s arrest. Tweed managed to bribe his way out of prison and flee the U.S.
However, due to the famous cartoons, he was recognized in other countries and was brought back to the U.S.
All of this signifies the “era of good stealings.” It showed how there was a lot of corruption in the government after the war.
