Descripción:

Union troops led by McClellan and Confederate troops led by Lee fight in Maryland. This battle was the "bloodiest day in US history:" 26,000 casualties. The Union won this battle and halted the Confederate advance in Maryland and forced Lee to retreat into Virginia.

Impacts:
1. This battle convinces many European countries to stay out of the war.
2. It caused Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation (see other bubble).
3. It caused Lincoln to remove McClellan (because McClellan let Lee escape; he could have made his troops chase Lee, ending the war).
