Descripción:

Border states were states that had slavery but stayed in the Union (were wavering on whether to leave). Lincoln considered them vital and worked to keep them happy; they're why Lincoln said the war was about preserving the Union and not about slavery.

Border states included: DE, KY, MD, MO, and later WV. They included vital resources the North needed (ex. factories, important rivers, etc).
