The San Fernando Valley Mission was a Spanish mission founded in 1797 in what is now the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California. Its original purpose was to convert the local Native American population to Christianity and ultimately try to eradicated the Native American identity. In this way, the missions were used as boarding schools with the intention of forcing Native children to speak a European language and a European religion.
