In reaction to Hitler's invasion of Poland, both invaded country's allies, Britain and France, declare war on Germany on September 3, 1939. The British ocean liner Athenia was sunk by a German U-30 submarine that believed the liner to be armed and belligerent, making the British ocean liner the first victim of that proclamation.
