Following the conclusion of the Vietnam War, Saigon fell. When the North Vietnamese refused to let the South Vietnamese administer their own government, the United States decided to withdraw its soldiers. The North Vietnamese marched into Saigon after the troops were evacuated and the war was declared over. South Vietnam's capital was located here.
They caused the communist takeover of South Vietnam by killing and injuring countless civilians. Although not in the manner that the United States desired, Vietnam unified. As a communist nation, they had united. In the end, containment had failed. This is significant because it demonstrated the futility of the conflict. Even though the United States had entered the conflict to halt the spread of communism and thousands of lives had been lost, Vietnam nonetheless fell to the communists.
