6 abr 1712 año - New York Slave Revolt 1712

Descripción:

WHAT HAPPENED?
- Uprising in NYC of 23 Black slaves
- April 6: A group of armed slaves gathered and set fire to a building near Broadway, later attacking the White colonists
- 9 White people got killed, 6 were injured --> more than 70 Black people were arrested, and 21 of them executed

WHAT WAS THE SITUATION LIKE FOR SLAVES IN NEW YORK?
- New York had one of the largest enslaved populations of all colonies at that time.
- Slaves mostly had to work in the domestic sphere or as artisans, dock workers and laboreres (instead of working on plantations).
- Due to the living conditions in the city, enslaved Africans lived near each other, making it easier to communicate and plan a conspiracy.

REASONS FOR THE REVOLT:
- 1702: The first New York Slave Codes are passed, further limiting the rights of the African community (e.g. right to own land, right to marry, right to assemble)
- 1711: New York's first slave market for the sale and rental of enslaved Africans is established.
