Vaccination against measles was inversely related to unsatisfied basic needs in urban areas (P = 0.01) and the proportions of indigenous and African-Ecuadorian residents in the canton (P = 0.015), and directly related to the canton's unemployment rate (P = 0.037). The distribution of immunization coverage was heterogeneous across cantons, indicating spatial dependence. The non-immunization rate in poorer cantons was 71% higher than in upper stratum cantons (prevalence ratio 1.71; 95% CI: 1.69-1.72).
