After King Charles VI died in 1740 his daughter Maria took to the throne but the French wanted control of Austria. Britain's population was almost 1 million while the French were only 43 thousand so they let local militias defend their colonies the British realized that fort Louisburg was built for water defense not land so the French took it over by foot in 1745
