17 sept 1789 año - Elizabeth Jane Ross

Descripción:

Born Perth 17 September 1789, died Dorset 1875

Hailing from considerable wealth, Elizabeth Jane Ross spent a significant part of her life in India with her husband Charles D’Oyly. Here they founded a lithographic press as well as the ‘Behar School of Athens’, a collective of artists. Numerous sketches of Eliza drawn by her husband or the artist George Chinnery depict her holding a harp or playing piano of which she was reported to be significantly accomplished. Her entire family were said to be very musical with many of the men in her family playing the bagpipes. It is likely her musical upbringing was what inspired her to transcribe around 150 Gaelic airs by her early 20s. These airs were found in the Library of Raasay House under a manuscript entitled 'Original Highland airs, transcribed by Elizabeth Jane Ross, 1812' and were donated to the University of Edinburgh Library in the 1950s.

Following Charles’s death in 1845, Elizabeth returned to Britain and stayed in Preston House in Dorset while occasionally visiting her family in Scotland to maintain her highland heritage.
