In 1989, nationalist movements in Eastern Europe, staring with Poland, evoked uprising against the Communist government. The “velvet revolution” in Czechoslovakia overthrew the Communist government. The Baltic states, frustrated with the lagging economy and Gorbachev’s handoffs, declared their independence from Moscow. Following the Baltic states, the Republic of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine all broke away from the USSR and created the Commonwealth of Independent States. The rest of the nine remaining republics also declared their independence. Finally, the mighty empire, with the goal of spreading communism, break down, giving each ethnic group their own freedom: democracy finally beats totalitarianism.
