On January 31, 1968, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched the Tet Offensive, breaking the cease fire agreement during the Lunar New Year. The assault was planned in attempt to instigate rebellion the South Vietnamese and collapse Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) forces. Although their intension to arouse rebellion failed, it caused heavy damage, where Westmoreland requested for more reinforcement from US to execute a thriving counter-attack. Moreover, it caused an intense crisis within the Johnson administration, which was unable to convince the American people that it was possible to win the war. President Johnson tried to negotiate to end the war; however, the peace talks last for 5 years, when more American soldiers died before the Tet Offensive.
