After Augustus' death, the first probation statute of 1878 was passed which authorized Boston to hire a Probation Officer under the supervision of the superintendent of police. Probation was made available to both men and women who were charged with misdemeanors or felonies. This important statute was the first of many in the process of imcorporating state-wide probation systems.
