The pact allowed Germany to fight the intermediate wars without facing the fear of a Soviet attack, thereby avoiding a two front war. In 1940, one month after Germany defeated France, Hitler ordered preperations for war against the Soviet Union. The German and Soviet Union signed a 10 year nonagression pact where each signatory swore not to attack one another. This bound Hitler and Stalin to peaceful relations.
