When you are making a movie like Magic Mike XXL, this summer’s buoyant beefcake blockbuster, you are presumably going to receive stranger requests than you would on, say, a period drama—especially if you are one of the few women in the male-stripper comedy.
Amber Heard, for example, remembers one early phone conversation she had with Channing Tatum, during which the Magic Mike XXL actor and executive producer asked whether she would be comfortable receiving a lap dance from him on-camera.
“When I first talked to Channing on the phone about [a certain scene], he was so apologetic,” Heard told reporters during a recent press conference. “His voice was so cautionary and polite. He was like, ‘Would you be O.K. with, uh, it’s like a lap dance that I have to give you. It’s a big deal.”
Confused why Tatum was so apologetic, Heard countered, "But, I’m not taking my top off?"
“No, you don’t strip.”
“So I don’t do any stripping?”
“No, no, no.”
“So I’m just sitting there?” Heard remembered telling Tatum. “Well how bad could it be? And then I found out.”
Several weeks after receiving the most formal lap-dance request in Los Angeles history, Heard found herself in rehearsals, watching Tatum demonstrate the elaborate erotic choreography, which involved throwing the actress over his shoulder, performing what can only be described as gyrating gymnastics over her body, and dancing with her legs hung around his hips.
“And in rehearsal, they [only] showed me like the polite, half-speed version of that dance,” Heard said. “I didn’t see it for real until I was in hair and makeup and 1,000 screaming extras were surrounding me . . . So a lot of [my facial] reactions were genuine. I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. It was fun.”
