Amber Heard on Her Sexuality: “I’m Opposed to Trying to Edit Myself to Be Palatable or Popular”
Amber Heard has described the difficulty of coming out as bisexual in Hollywood, saying that she didn’t need to “deny” her sexuality to be herself and that hiding the truth about sexuality can, in her view, be admitting that it’s “wrong.”
In an interview with The Times, the Magic Mike XXL actress talked about coming out as bisexual at a GLAAD event in 2010 at a time when she “didn’t know of anyone else in my position who was a working female lead actress” who had taken that step.
She said: “I don’t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don’t want to have to be defined by it. I’m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don’t give a f—. I fight, but I shouldn’t have to.”
Heard, who married Johnny Depp earlier this year, said that denying or hiding the truth can be a negative thing, a pointed barb at people who remain in the closet. “I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you’re inadvertently admitting it’s wrong. I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else, but I’m with who I’m with.”
Admitting that she rewrote some of her lines in Magic Mike XXL to make her character bisexual, Heard reiterated that her sexuality or anything about her as a person should have no bearing on her talent as an actress. “I’m not a better actress than I was yesterday, and my personal life should have no effect on that,” she said
