1 ene 1800 año - The Terakoya - The Foundaion for an Educated Population
Descripción:
In the Edo period, the educated elite were the Samurai, who studied at elite schools. However, commoners too learned to read and write at special schools called "Terakoya". In the capital Edo, for example, terakoya attendance reached 70% at the end of the 18th century. These schools resulted in much of the population being literate and having a basic education, which was quite uncommon at the time. This laid the foundation for the emergence of an educated, urban, Japanese middle class, who already possesed many of the skills they would eventually need.
