During this time, the English navy was very strong and had a growing nationalistic spirit, so the monarch at their time, Queen Elizabeth I, wanted to expand her empire and wealth. She decided to send colonists to the New World so they could find a place to settle in. The colonists explored the east coast of America and eventually arrived at Roanoke. By 1587, the colony had a population of 116. Colonists would soon after seek new territory to claim.
