Queen Isabella said that the Spanish conquerors could collect tribute from the Indians and use them as workers as long as they protected and payed them. this was ignored though through forced labor, starvation, forcing them to work in mines and spreading disease. Was later abolished and more protection of natives was added because of pushback from dominican friars and because of the publishing of bartolome de las casas.
