In 1948, the HUAC began its investigation on Alger Hiss. He had been a former communist himself after an editor, Whitaker Chambers, stated that Hiss had been one before. This was important in part because the United States was trying to get rid of any spy within the country. This would lead to many trials for Alger Hiss.
