Also known as the bloodiest battle of the Civil War to take place in just a day, the Battle of Antietam was fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland. There were 132,000 forces engaged, with 22,717 casualties (12,401 Union and 10,316 Confederate). The battle ended with a Union victory. This battle was the one which gave Lincoln the courage to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
