The Sugar Act of 1764 placed duties on Madeira wine, coffee, and other products, most importantly the molasses duty of three pence per gallon. The failed Molasses Act of 1733 had tried to keep French molasses out by placing a duty of six pence per gallon. However, I often circumvented the authorities by bribing them with one pence per gallon. I would have preferred to pay a duty of one pence per gallon with this new act, and my livelihood could be threatened. I understand that England needs to raise money, but I feel that this Act should be repealed and replaced.
