Descripción:

Greek doctor Galen emphasises Hippocrates' methods and theories. Like Hippocrates, he taught the importance of clinical observation and recording symptoms. He developed the Theory of the Four Humours further, believing that disease could be treated using opposites - i.e. if someone had too much phlegm from a cold, you could be given something warm to balance the humours. He also recommended dietary changes, sleep and exercise as treatments.

Galen 'increased' knowledge of anatomy by dissecting dead animals, as dissecting humans was prohibited by the Church in Rome. This led to many inaccurate anatomical findings, however he did prove that the brain controlled the body rather than the heart, and that veins circulated the blood. Due to his theories agreeing with the Church, his ideas were used for the next 1500 years.
